Here is the e-mail conversation.

I have been a fan of the Spyro series since you created it, sticking with it through all of the developers it has had. Now it's been a year and a half since Dawn of the Dragon, and Activision hasn't hinted at a new game. From what I've seen at www.spyroforum.com and other sites, people are wondering if you will ever buy it back. A lot of people still consider you Spyro's best developer. I like the newer games too, but I can't argue with that.
I understand you're busy with Ratchet and Clank, but I can't help wondering about the future of the first game I considered myself a fan of. It started my dragon obsession, I'm not going to lie. Do you have any intention of buying Spyro back? Please answer.

Thanks for your patience. We've been backlogged on e-mails from the office being closed during the holidays.
As far as Spyro goes, we didn't own the Spyro license, Universal did. Therefore, we had no say on which studios made games for the series. When we decided to do Ratchet, they took the series to another developer - it just makes sense business-wise. Just as we don't own Ratchet or Resistance. The PSP Ratchet and Resistance games were completely made by other studios with minimal input from Insomniac. We knew the basics of the storylines, but the rest was totally left to the other developers. I hope that makes sense. Video games after all are a business first and foremost, and sometimes that means different people work on different games.
We are a small studio and don't have the funding to buy the Spyro license back. And at this point there is roughly 10 people out of our staff of 170 that ever worked on the Spyro series. Sorry to say, there is no chance of us going back to Spyro at this point. We have our course set for the next 3 or so years - and unfortunately, Spyro isn't one of the games we will be working on.
Thanks for being so supportive of Insomniac Games. We all wish you the best.
Might not be the response a lot of us were hoping for, but it's still an important piece of news for Spyro fans. All we can do now is hope Activision doesnt let us down.
Exactly the response I expected. I gave up hope of Insomniac developing Spyro a long time ago, to be honest. I've just been hoping some other company could give it some more quality.
That's cool that you got in touch with them, though. Now, like you said, let's just hope Activision doesn't screw up the next game, whatever it is.
Nice response you received OrangeDragon -- at least we can rest our heads down for the very least of times of hearing that legitimate comment. Don't screw up AC-TI-VIS-ION! DX

Personally I dont think you shoudl have asked about "buying it back" because if they wanted to make a spyro game, he wouldnt "buy him back" they would just Make a Spyro game produced by Activision.
Nethertheless, I wanted to know how many people from Insomniac worked on Spyro, so I'm happy that is answered.
Anyway, I didnt really expect Insomniac to do anything more, But I still have hope for old spyro himself.
I don't think another Spyro game from Insomniac is a good idea - they were out of Spyro ideas anyway - but another company who can do a good job with an original-styled game...

Out of ideas AT THE TIME. Who's to say they don't have another awesome idea buried away in the back of their heads, and they're going "*bleep*, I wish we could work on another Spyro game, if only to test this idea and see it realized."
Hopes are dashed for now, my only hope left is that a fan will find themselves working with whoever has Spyro at the time and bring back good old classic Spyro with a new twist and eliminate all traces of TLOS series. DARE TO DREAAAAAAAAAAM!

Activison is a great company. Look at Call Of Duty and Brutal Legend.
Spyro has the potential to be made a big deal again in the gaming industry with Activison. Lets just hope that the next game is gonna make a real big splash, its time for Spyro to trully get revived. We have a new setting and characters, now its time for the last few years to pay off.

Euh... THUG, CoD, BL... Spyro?! I dunno... Everyone has his/her own specialty, and I don't think activision would ever be the "reviver" of Spyro, if you know what I mean. Personally, I think Insomniac was the best (That's probarbly for all of you), and that it won't be easy to find an equal or better company for doing that. Activision is imo not the right company for Spyro.

Agreed, I never said it was. Activison is more of a publisher though. They hand it down to one of their studios. Who knows? Only time will tell for our beloved purple dragon.

As long as Spyro games are still made and are at least playable and remain, in a way, true to the characters and basic story (which TLOS series was, it was very vague, but there were some 'Spyro' elements there, albeit drowned out in fighting and a straightforward storyline); I'm not too bothered.

Appearently they put more thought into games like CoD. Just look at Spyro and Crash. They both turned out to be fighting games that ALMOST mirror each other. Instead of fury you have jacking and instead of mojo you have crystals.
When game designers want to try something different that twists Spyro differently than copy and paste storyline and copy and paste gameplay... let me know.
So let me if Blizzard's Influence rubs off on Activision. Blizzard makes awesome games. Diablo = Pure <3.
